Eternity: Cast Away

This clip from CAST AWAY demonstrates the loneliness and isolation of Hell. We used this clip last Sunday (11/28) as a lead into our discussion on Hell. It illustrates our being cut off from everything else when we choose Hell over Heaven.

Cast Away: Man Makes Wilson, Makes Fire from Duncan Toms on Vimeo.

"Earth, I think, will not be found by anyone to be in the end a very distinct place. I think earth, if chosen instead of Heaven, will turn out to have been, all along, only a region in Hell: and earth, if put second to Heaven, to have been from the beginning a part of Heaven itself."

On the following Sundays

10/10 - Miracles in Scripture

White Water Rafting 2010

The white water rafting trip was definitely one of the best BASIC retreats. Surprisingly, the nine-hour car ride there was almost as fun as the activities in West Virginia, but then again, that depends on whom you have in your car. On the first day we helped cut down rotting trees and fix headstones in a historic cemetery. Though it may sound dull, it was a really rewarding experience, especially since I got to demolish a tree or two with an axe. But it was also great to know that I was making a difference and was doing some good in addition to having fun.

After we left from the cemetery, there was a dramatic change in the landscape. Much more sunlight poured into the cemetery, and the tombs looked better groomed. That night Father Mark And Father JJ came out to perform an evening Mass. That was quite the experience, and I really enjoyed the intimacy of the small service, even though I could have done without all the smoke from the fire piercing my eyes.

On the second day, the real fun began. This was the day that we rode the rapids. Our group was lucky enough to have Father JJ in our raft. That in it of itself was pretty awesome. On the raft we did some surfing, riding, fighting with other rafts, attempting to jump to other rafts (Jeff Sliney), pushing people off the rafts, and most importantly, flipping our own rafts. The most exhilarating part of the ride was getting everyone on our raft to move to the back, then we headed upstream towards the rapids, and finally we flipped our raft vertically. And to top the trip off, all who dared climb the 20-foot rock plateau got to jump off into the rocky depths below (don’t worry there’s no way that you can actually hit any of the rocks on your way down). The cameraman videotaped us and determined who did the coolest tricks off the rock, so I recommend that you forget your fear and attempt a spin flip, double front flip, or something completely crazy…. like a belly flop.

Overall, the white water rafting trip was an amazing experience and a great way to get closer with all the BASIC teens and Core members, and with Father Mark and Father JJ. Oh, and I forgot to mention, if you can play guitar and/or sing, bring your guitar, plenty of popular songs, and your singing voice, because there will be a campfire sing-along and some bizarre story-telling. The White Water Rafting trip is expensive, but it’s worth every penny. Don’t hesitate. Don’t ask who else is going. Just do it. ~ Josh Ross (Class of 2010) ~

On Monday, April 26, 2010 at 7:00p - ALL high school teens are ENCOURAGED to attend a focus group meeting where YOU will have an opportunity to share what YOU want from your parish youth ministry program. A professional moderator will be facilitating this discussion. This is very important to the continual growth and success of our youth ministry program (B.A.S.I.C.) and the development of our brothers and sisters in faith.

The Meaning of each Song at Mass

  • Opening/Gathering Song: is intended to unite us and open our hearts to hear God’s voice. It gathers God’s people together in community.
  • Kyrie: The sung Kyrie follows the penitential rite. The plea “Lord, have pity on us” can be heard throughout the Gospels (Matthew 9:27, 15:22, 20:30; Mark 10:47; Luke 16:24, 17:13). The Kyrie in the Mass is an acclamation of praise for the mercy of God.
  • Gloria: was originally composed in Greek during the second century. The opening line of the hymn is taken from Luke 2:14, when the angel of the Lord after announcing the birth of Christ to the shepherds, praised God with a multitude of heavenly host. The Gloria allows us, assembled in the Holy Spirit, to express our praises and as a community, becoming one in heart and voice.
  • Psalm: These are sung at Mass because they were originally written as hymns of praise by King David - you can find all these psalms in Bible in the Book of Psalms. The Responsorial Psalm is sung after the first reading. It corresponds to each reading and puts on our lips, words that sum up the day’s scripture; Recalling God’s great works for us.
  • Gospel Acclamation and Acclamation of Eucharistic Prayer: Allow us to acclaim the presence of Christ in his Gospel and on the Altar, at the two most solemn moments of the Mass. We praise and welcome and greet the Lord, who is about to speak to us in the Gospel and profess our faith in liturgical song.
  • Preparation of the Gifts: A song appropriate to the day and season may be sung during the collection and procession bringing the gifts.
  • Sanctus: Core musical element of the Eucharistic Prayer. In this Acclamation we join the angels in the praise of divine glory. The first part of Sanctus is bases upon Isaiah 6:3 and Daniel 7:10. The second part is based on Matthew 21:9. The Sanctus invites us to lift up our hearts to the Lord in prayer and thanks AND unites Heaven and Earth (the Communion of Saints - the Angels and saints; both those who are Saints and our loved ones who have gone before us to Heaven and Purgatory). The meaning of the prayer is that the entire congregation joins themselves to Christ in acknowledging the great things God has done and in offering the sacrifice.
  • Memorial Acclamation/Assent: (Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again.) Recalling His death, His resurrection, His coming again. This is our Mystery of Faith. If this were not true we would not have a religion or faith. Thus we proclaim our faith at every Eucharistic celebration.
  • Agnus Dei and Communion Songs: The Breaking of Bread (the gesture of Christ at the last Supper). This signifies the sharing in the one bread of life, which is Christ, who died and rose for the salvation of the world. We express our unity in the Christ we receive, becoming one with His sacrifice. We are supposed to stand united during Communion and praise God together for having given us his son as ransom for our salvation.
  • The Closing Song: Sends us out inspired…Going in peace to love and serve the Lord; being Christ for others until the next gathering (I.E. going "BEYOND THE DOORS").

Winter Camp 2010 Reflection

Winter Camp was a really enriching experience for me. I grew more in my faith and I learned a lot about different topics varying from the Corporal Works of Mercy and Mary. I was so fortunate to be able to plan such a wonderful retreat with my fellow Teen Council members. Going to Winter Camp was also a really rewarding experience. I learned to build more trust in my friends. I also got to know my friends a lot better. It is great when a person can be in a setting where no one judges them and they can be completely open. I think everyone who went to Winter Camp learned a lot about themselves and other people. I hope that I can take everything that I learned on the retreat and in B.A.S.I.C. and apply it to my life. Winter Camp was inspiring to me and it reminded me that I will always have God and the people who love me to get me through life. ~ Carol Monis, AHS Junior

Our Day at Gleaners Food Bank

Last Saturday, January 9, a group of 10 teens from St. Anastasia took a trip to Gleaners Food Bank to volunteer for a few hours. We arrived and received a brief orientation and nutrition lesson from our host and began immediately packing snack packages for kids whose families can not afford to feed them three meals a day. This program is called Kids Helping Kids (K.H.K.). During our brief time at Gleaners our group packaged 4 pallets of food totaling in 1680 lbs. of food for those less fortunate. We came back to St. Anastasia for lunch and had a great discussion about how and why people struggle to support their families... even with something as basic as food.

Kids Helping Kids is a program that combines volunteerism, nutrition education and hunger awareness for school-aged children. K.H.K. encourages sharing and helps the less fortunate. For more information and ways you can help visit the Gleaners Community Food Bank website.

God bless!
